Protect Your Home from A Dry Well After a Power Outage

If you’ve been through a power outage with a well, you may know that your water supply is limited during a power outage. If you are not taking precautions to avoid a dry well, your well pump may not work after power restoration. We will walk you through what causes a dry well and how to prevent it.

What Is a Dry Well?

A dry well is a condition that prevents the electric well pump from drawing water after a power outage. Drawing water from the well during a power outage can empty the bladder tank, resulting in a dry well. The pressure switch trips as the air pressure in the bladder tank drops due to a lack of water. The pressure switch cuts-out the electric well pump, preventing the water pump from working after power restoration.

Dry Well Prevention

After a power outage, resolving a dry well requires resetting the pressure switch. If you have a manual pressure switch, move the arm on the switch from off to start or auto. The electric well pump should begin pumping water to refill the bladder tank. Frequent tripping of the pressure switch may be an incentive to invest in an electronic pressure switch that will automatically restore function when the power comes back.

Preparing for a power outage with a ready supply of water for use while there is no power is a simple way to prevent a dry well, and supplies your home with water during the power outage. Installing a home generator may also be a solution, allowing well usage during an outage.
